Recent revelations that Australia is importing fresh whale imports could threaten our international credibility as eco-friendly.

Australia has found itself in murky waters following revelations that a handful of its companies have been cleared to import fresh whale products.

Despite a strong anti-whaling stance – including protests against Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean – it has been revealed that since 2005 four companies have had approval to import fresh whale products.

Extreme green protestors continue to take strong measures to expose the cruelty of whaling, which has long been viewed by Australians as non-environmentally-friendly. Liquid and plastic waste may be choking marine life but commercial fishing and whaling continue to pose a significant threat to sustainability.

A greener image

Importantly, Australia needs to protect its reputation or risk being perceived as underhanded by the international community when it comes to this issue.

Western Australia’s new opposition leader has backed away from a previous Labor Party election commitment to halt the operation of uranium mines.

Mark McGowan has softened his party’s anti-uranium policy more than a year out from next year’s March state elections.

Uranium mining has been opposed in Western Australia because of concerns over the environment and safety. While nuclear supporters defend uranium mining as environmentally-friendly, liquid waste from tailings and radioactive waste present management challenges.

WA’s Labor Party had previously broke away from its Federal Government counterparts on the issue of uranium mining, vowing to block projects if elected despite Federal Labor supporting uranium exports to India.

“We remain opposed to uranium mining, but I recognise we have to deal with the hand we are dealt if we come to government in 2013,” Mr McGowanhas said.

“Accordingly, if Labor is successful at the 2013 election any uranium mine under construction will be allowed to proceed, to become operational and operate in its lawfully granted conditions.”

The race is on for mining companies to open WA’s first yellowcake mine. Adelaide-based Toro Energy has announced plans to start construction on its $280 million Wiluna project by 2013 and wants to export about 820 tonnes of uranium oxide each year.

Australia is not the only coastal environment where soil erosion has been caused by excessive industrial operations and inadequate agricultural planning. It is a cycle, and in local areas, it can actually be a continuous cycle which feeds and waters itself ad infinitum. However, when eco systems are not taken into account during land renovation, industrial projects, or over hunting and over grazing, this can affect more than just a few animals or a few blades of grass. In fact, if the entire eco system cycle is dependent upon itself alone, introducing new components to the cycle necessarily means that new balances must be considered and made available to both plants and wildlife. If socially conscious developers and engineers are not aware of these complex and delicate life cycles, then desertification, along with other earth damaging effects, can occur. Therefore, it is important to always research and be aware of the original habitats and geological structure of a coastline, plain, or wooded area before moving modern practices into the cycle.
