Take A Deep Breath and Plunge In

Diesel Bug KillerImagine the first time you jumped into the water. Either that, or imagine the first time you jumped into a lake or the ocean. You hold your breath, you close your eyes, and you are sure that the result will be terrible. You are so afraid. Everyone is watching. You have to do it.

You take a deep breath, and you plunge in.

The water hits you like a brick wall, in the beginning.

If you jumped into a lake or the ocean, the cold takes your breath away. Even if you are studiously holding your breath, the cold seems to knock whatever oxygen you have inside of your right out of your body. Suddenly, the cold is above you, keeping you from your air. You struggle, thrashing wildly not intelligently, and seem to come up to the surface far later than you should have.

Your lungs fill with that first deep gulp. The light blinds your eyes, and you are not sure which ways is up. Then, you quickly find where the shore is, and swim frantically toward it, until your feet touch the bottom, and you feel like you have contact with dry land again.

Have you ever thought that this must be what it feels like, if you were mother earth, to be polluted with toxic chemicals all of the time? It’s too much. It’s overwhelming.

Let Envirosafe Solutions bring you chemicals which are eco friendly. Let our environmentally friendly liquids help you maintain your business, from fuel conditioner to toilet bowl cleaner, and from mineral deposit remover to radiator coolant. Together, we can make mother earth feel better about our presence.

Rather than being dumped off a cliff into the ocean, we can nurture and protect the earth, by gradually walking our environmentally friendly behaviors into the warm tropical sea. Gradually, little by little, we are soothed by the warm, swirling ocean around us. That is the way to treat planet earth, not with harsh chemical treatments. Call Envirosafe Solutions if you want to share the soft, gentle protection of our world with our company. We provide high quality chemical solutions to business all over Australia and to select countries: (+61) 1300 88 90 70.

Agriculture and Its Carbon Footprint

marine glass cleanerIf you have been keeping up with reading all of your National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines, you know how important it is that the agricultural industry reduces its own carbon footprint and that it finds better, more sustainable ways of continuing, particularly since the global need for food may double by 3050 due to the population increase worldwide and the fact that developing nations are able to sustain themselves better and therefore have a higher quality preference for food.

Agriculture is one of the heaviest polluters on the earth, and you would think this wouldn’t be the case since it is growing stuff! However, agriculture, with the farm equipment, need for fuel, and the fact that many different plants contribute to the petroleum industry’s headway into modern society, is one of the biggest polluters in the world, and it must be brought down a bit on the emissions scale.

Even corn is used to produce ethanol, and many plant based chemicals are combined with petroleum products or are used to refine petroleum products. Agriculture itself is a big problem, but as our educational magazines tell us, it can be made far better than it is right now. One of the ways this can happen is through using some of the planet protecting techniques employed in small farms in developing countries and combining that with modern technology and innovation.

If we could combine the strengths from developing nations and modern systems, without either of their weaknesses, then we might have a solution to agriculture on our hands. Of course, we would need to implement whatever approach we took for long enough that we would know how to it would affect soil conditions over time, but that is just a matter of research.

84 Year Report on Icelandic Eco Village

Eco FriendlyThe Solheimar eco village in Iceland is only an hour outside of Reykjavik. It has only 120 residents, 40 of whom are special needs individuals. It has several small factories, a community geothermal pool, and many cool amenities which make it one of the friendliest, earthiest, and most eco friendly places which you could possibly find in Iceland, and that is saying a lot. Iceland is known for its eco friendly sustainability.

Although we would consider this to be an eco village today, it has existed for 84 years and is one of the oldest of such villages in Iceland. It was originally started as a special needs farm and home, but it has grown into the village which visitors would find completely wonderful.

Naturally, in order for a village such as this to be completely eco friendly, it has to use eco friendly cleaning solutions. This is the kind of situation for which you can use products from Envirosafe Solutions. Corporate Offices & Businesses

New Standards in Company Design

Solvent Free DegreaserNew standards in company design are making the act of being eco friendly much easier than it used to be. Company design requires a total architecture, aesthetics, and color scheme to all be taken into consideration when coming up with the texture and feel for your business.

So, when you are looking to implement eco friendly design, you already have more space and friendlier space to work with here in modern times than you did twenty years ago, or even ten years ago.

Companies are recognizing a need for space, a need for design and influence, and they are seeing that human nature itself needs warm, slick, modern design more than it needs efficiency or cramped office spaces. New standards in company design allow for the implementation of eco friendly features, such as solar paneling, window usage, airflow ventilation, and living walls.

Of course, with all of those environmentally safe features, you will want to use environmentally friendly liquids, or chemicals, to keep everything in good working order without harsh chemical residue or non-breathable air at certain times of the day.

Design has now led into the development of insulation which is not only more eco friendly, but which is changeable and movable, depending upon the weather or the season, so that the building itself (or the inner shell of the building) can be altered at will to meet the needs created by hot and cold weather, the extremes of both.

Of course, company design also has to do with the choices you make regarding the products your business orders to keep it going during difficult times. Without these products, your company could not function as well, and you might as well make sure that they are safe for the planet.

Envirosafe Solutions has a long list of chemical products for your business. We provide eco friendly industrial liquid to companies in Australia and other select countries and we make being ecologically safe really easy. All you have to do is pick from our selection of chemicals: antibacterial hand wash, solvent free degreaser, radiator cleaner, multi-purpose lubricant, and many others, and then call us and place your order, or place your order online: (+61) 1300 88 90 70.

Tree Homes

Rust RemoverOn the famous Animal Planet television channel, there is numerous programming for the Treehouse Master TV show, and Pete the expert travels all over the U.S. (and all over the world) looking for new and unusual tree houses and building custom tree houses for clients. There is something magical and primal about living in a tree house, even a custom built modern one, which appeals pretty deep to the human soul.

It’s private, it’s cozy, and there is always a perception within the house that you can’t be seen from without it. It’s a really cool feeling and there are few people who don’t find tree houses magical.

Pete the tree house master is always excited to learn about new tree houses and to see what other people have done over the course of many years when they develop and build their own tree houses. But, how does this discussion relate to being eco friendly? We’re glad you asked.

You see, when people commune with nature, they learn more about nature and how everything fits together to form a perfect whole, where thousands of tiny, unseen eco systems thrive and work together to form this cohesive whole.

Envirosafe Solutions specializes in eco friendly liquid products, but we know that not everyone takes nature activities to the point of using eco friendly chemical solutions, much less to the point of actually developing and living in a tree house as a residence. Well, it is always a good idea to take the first tiny step there is to take.

Use our chemical solutions which are all environmentally friendly liquids, like our solvent free degreaser, our sanitiser, our mould rid, and our hard water laundry liquid. There are so many ways in which we have made our products safer for the environment than other chemicals of their nature, and we want to shout it from the treetops. Tree homes are a great use for our products, because you will need cleaning and maintenance chemicals which are safe for our environment. Therefore, only use products from Envirosafe Solutions in your tree house! At the same time, you can benefit the earth by using them in your business, both your office and jobsite, as well. The Use of Animals

mineral deposit removerBeing eco friendly in today’s world, a world of polluting innovation and efficient toxicity, can be an interesting process. For instance, if your business involves animals in any way, you may be said to be exploiting animals for your own benefit or you may be said to use animals in an eco friendly way to get work done.

Being sustainable is right, but hurting or harming animals is wrong. Where exactly do we draw the line?

What are the benefits to bringing animals into the worksite and job marketplace? The truth is that animals may be used for training employees, for pulling heavy loads, for carrying people and packages across large spaces, and for a wide variety of other purposes. Of course, if animals and people are so suited to work together, then you would think that many countries would want to replace their low cost, but high pollution transportation systems with slightly higher cost, but much lower pollution solutions which will aid you in your progress to make the world more ecologically sound.

Of course, there is a great deal of investment in the idea that, if you can get something done with less work, then it is automatically better. Well, in many ways, that is true. Efficiency, smoothness of operation, and efficacy make an operation far more revenue attracting than other, slower ways.

As long as we are using animals for eco friendly reasons, then we have to be able to care for them and clean up after them on a regular basis. Disinfectant, antibacterial hand wash, and mould rid are important parts of this process, and ours are all eco friendly in and of themselves. Naturally, you would wish to incorporate our products into your line of chemical solutions and perhaps to suggest their use to other animal caregivers and handlers.

When you use products from us, you are purposely and actively making the world better, and not just for you. Businesses which spread the word, either directly or indirectly, about eco friendly products to their employees are engaging their workers’ minds and allowing them to see the future possibilities. Huge Iceberg headed toward Shipping Lanes in the Ocean

Eco Friendly Liquid ProductsThe iceberg known as B31 broke off of an Antarctic glacier in November of 2013. Naturally, scientists from NASA and several international agencies have been keeping a close eye on it, even going so far as to drop quite a few GPS tracking devices onto it so that we can keep a better eye on it. You would think that something of this size would be easy to track, but many icebergs are difficult to tracking during the winter months, in the dark, and other various additional conditions.

B-31 is now getting closer to shipping lanes, which have been more prevalent in recent years due to increased traffic in the southern seas, which in turn is due to more advanced technology allowing us to travel further and further out into once unfamiliar territory. Scientists are particularly watchful of this area of the Antarctic, since glaciers and icebergs seem to be melting much faster here than in other areas. They are concerned that this may be one of the biggest contributing factors to sea levels rising.

Naturally, everyone wants to make a difference when it comes to global warming, but too many people think that they are just not able to make a big enough impact to make any difference to the temperature of planet Earth. However, it is the combined use of many little changes which can, in the end, make the most difference. That is why using eco friendly chemical solutions in your regular business care and maintenance can make all of the difference in the world someday.

Envirosafe Solutions provides environmental cleaning products which are safe for the planet and which you can use to help with your part in the fight against global warming. We provide rust converter, toilet bowl cleaner, rubber remover, industrial hand cleaner and many other products. All of our chemicals are eco friendly and we provide you with a thirty day money back guarantee, so that you can try out our products and make sure that they live up to our hype. If you are looking for your own way to join the fight against global warming, then look for products from Envirosafe Solutions: (+61) 1300 88 90 70.

Key Alternatives to Sustaining the Environment

Dishwashing Liquid, Glass cleaner, Fuel ConditionerWhen people talk about sustainability, they are most frequently referring to sustainability of the planet in relation to green and environmental issues.. With more people becoming attuned to a green society, the term becomes more significant with regards to energy use as well as energy production.

Defining Sustainability

True sustainability actually refers to an equal ratio of use and replacement. It translates actively to the fine balance of matching usage with production so that excess of waste, pollution and destruction is minimized. It also refers to the notion of balancing usage with replenishments, so from finances through to natural resources, using more than can be replenished causes a shortage – which has dire consequences in terms of the finite nature of natural resources.

History Demonstrates Habit of Delay

One of the most problematic aspects of the current environmental problem facing the planet is the human capacity for procrastination. This entrenched habit of delaying the inevitable is almost woven into the psyche of humanity and operates as a kind of environmental denial that affords people the capacity to avoid stark realities unless they are immediately and severely impacted. This occurred with the oil shortage of the 1970’s in the United States. The oil crisis motivated the development of cars that utilised alternative fuels and electric power, but once the supply was corrected and oil became obtainable again, the concerted development of alternatively fuelled cars was dispensed with.

Second Shortage Brought New Development

In recent years, the price of oil has escalated once again and petrol have risen  drastically. The current crisis breathes new life into the need for alternative fuels once again and scientific developments in solar power, magnesium powered cars and hydrogen fuel cells have again been on the agenda. Hybrid cars have been developed by Toyota and other Asian automobile manufacturers and the reality of finite oil supply and global warming has pushed the world into action once again.

Support Green Industries and Products

Undoubtedly, the stark reality of the finite nature of oil and fossil fuels can no longer be denied and it is imperative all of us take action to change our behaviours and our business and household practices. Each and every day, Australians need to take heed of the warnings and actually change their behaviours with regard to office and family life, industrial practices and cleaning methods.

Envirosafe Solutions understands this predicament and has developed an Extreme Green range that comprises eco friendly liquid products. Dishwashing liquid, glass cleaner and a complete eco friendly industrial liquid range are all available. For more information contact a sales assistant on 1300 889070

Alternative Power Supplies

Eco Friendly, Environmental Cleaning Products, Dishwashing LiquidTruly going green involves incorporating ways to save the environment by eliminating pollution and your environmental footprint. It involves considerably more than empty rhetoric and can include all aspects of lifestyle and living conditions, as well as utilising alternative energy sources.

Various Alternative Energy Resources

There are different methods currently available to generate electricity that do not require the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas Some of the available alternative energy resources that are gaining popularity in Australia and in other western nations, includes:

  • Wind power
  • Solar power
  • Hydroelectric power

These are best explained as viable alternatives to greenhouse gas causing fossil fuels. However, in spite of the problematic nature of fossils fuels, they are still favoured by many because of their familiarity and because the instigation of alternatives involves considerable cost.

Cost of Alternative Fuel Sources an Obstacle to Full Acceptance

So switching to an alternative energy source is both an issue of price and habituation or routine.

The world has become accustomed to the available and prevailing power supplies. The way individuals in the developed world live their lives is now very much grounded on a dependence on coal, electricity and oil – all of which currently contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. While people may see the need for change from a theoretical standpoint, reluctance sets in when one is confronted by the increased cost issues associated with transitioning away from older modes of energy production towards alternative methods.

However, those willing to embrace alternatives tend to be those groups and individuals looking to a future scenario when the supply of oil, gas, and coal is depleted.

There is little doubt that most people are willing to do their part to stop pollution, but more conservative opponents to climate change often reduce the need for change to a purely fiscal matter of economics. Higher-cost resources that may alter and increase the cost of production have not been fully embraced by multinational businesses and corporations and as a result, government regulation of carbon production has now become the reality and the incentive for shifting practices.

The introduction of the carbon tax in 2012 and the development of Professor Ross Garnaut’s carbon pricing policies may signal the beginning of a constructive move towards the newer technologies.

Changing Practices

Changing practices and educating people on the urgency for change may necessitate the kinds of strategies employed by the Gillard Government – including the carbon tax and all that it entails. While considerable rebates exist for low income groups, the use of a tax to effect change is perceived as perhaps the only way to ensure a future for our children.

Envirosafe Solutions supports the use of alternative energies and believes wholeheartedly in the need to alter our work and home practices. Make sure you consider the new PDF Extreme Green Brochure on the Envirosafe Solutions website. It displays a full range of eco-friendly products that are available for purchase and use.

6 Tips to Save Energy in Your Home

Eco Friendly , Eco Friendly Liquid Products, Environmental Cleaning Products, Eco Friendly Industrial LiquidThe environment needs your help if it is to survive and there are many ways you can help while also saving money at the same time.

The average family spends about 2000 dollars annually on energy. And every dollar you spend causes more power to be generated. If you can reduce your home’s energy consumption you can save money while also helping to cut back on the need to produce more energy.

Here are 6 tips to help you save money and save energy consumption in your home.

Average savings can be between $100 and $300 depending on your abode’s condition and age

1. Conduct an energy audit of your home.

By knowing where the house is losing heat in the winter and cool air in the summer you need to know where the leaks are. You can perform this audit on your own or contact someone from local utilities that often offer this service free of charge. However, if you plan to apply for government incentives for energy savings, the audit will need to be conducted by a professional, certified by the government.

2. Fill in the cracks around doors and windows.

Walk around the outside of your home and look at the seal around all windows and doors. Using acrylic latex caulk to seal all openings can stop warm and cold air from escaping from the home and stop you from paying to try to heat or cool the outside. If you live in an older weatherboard home, make sure the joins are sound and properly sealed. It will make all the difference.

3. Install weather stripping around doors and windows.

With older doors and windows, weather stripping can be installed to stop air flow to the outside, as well as hot or cold air getting into the home from outside. Caulking can be used on the outer frame of doors and windows, but not on the doors and windows themselves. Plastic weather stripping is a cheap and phenomenal way to save on power bills!

4. Add ceiling insulation. Depending on the climate in which you live adding insulation can help save on heating and cooling costs. Check with your local building supply store to see how much insulation is recommended in your area and then add more if necessary. Rebates may also be available in some states in Australia.

5. Replace old energy-hungry appliances. Many choose to only replace their old appliances when they no longer work, mainly due to the cost. However, when looking at new ones don’t let the price be the main selling point. Consider how much energy you can save each year over the life expectancy of the new appliance and see how much money the new one will save you each year. You can see how fast the new appliance can pay for itself by the reduced energy cost alone. Most new Australian appliances now have a visible energy rating displayed prominently. For larger items such as fridges and washing machines, make sure you go for substance as well as style. Take note of the energy rating and source an appliance that is efficient and environmentally sound.

6. Plant trees around the home. Regardless of where you live planting shade trees around the home can reduce the sun’s heating effects on your home. Planting two trees on the west side of the house and at least one on the right will reduce the energy required to cool the home in the summer and heat it in the winter.

Envirosafe Solutions supports all Australian households to cut down on energy usage and heating and cooling costs. These simple steps can really help. If you would like to source eco friendly liquid products that are also sustainable and less harsh on the environment, contact and Envirosafe Solutions sales team member on  1300 889070.

Carbon Sink options for Rural Australia

The report was initially commissioned by and for the Queensland Premier’s Council on Climate Change, but has much broader and wider implications for the whole of rural Australia. Today, we’ll take a quick look at the report’s key findings which build on those of the 2008 Garnaut Review “by examining risks, barriers and uncertainties and by estimating levels of carbon storage and mitigation that are realistically attainable.”[1]

How much greenhouse gas can actually be stored or mitigated by the changes in rural land use in both Queensland and also the whole of Australia? What can be realistically expect to achieve by way of biosequestration and mitigation, and how do we encourage our rural land users to embrace these practices as economically viable and ethically responsible modes of rural production and pursuit?

The CSIRO says that “rural land systems have significant potential to store or mitigate greenhouse gas production and can also offset large amounts of Australia’s emissions over the next 40 years.”[2] And if there is one commodity Australia has a lot of…it is land. Loads of it. Hectares and hectares of it.

Some of the key findings of “Greenhouse Gas Mitigation and Carbon Biosequestration Opportunities from Rural Land Use” are:

  • Land can be used over the next 40 years to reduce and mitigate our carbon emissions
  • With concerted research and policy adjustments by Government, huge reductions in carbon emissions are possible
  • The agricultural land systems of the nation, as well as land clearing currently account for approximately “28% of our net greenhouse gas emissions of 597 Mt CO2-e/yr”[3]
  • Queensland alone can offset and negate up to 77% of its current emissions. This figure is also translatable nationally, according to the CSIRO
  • This carbon storage and abatement should be viewed as just one component of a multi-faceted emissions reduction strategy.
  • New forestry and planting could be a significant carbon sinking strategy for rural land holders and users to pursue
  • Rehabilitating overgrazed land could reduces emissions by as much as 26 Mt CO2-e/yr
  • Using renewable biofuels rather than fossil fuels could reduce emissions by a further 9 Mt CO2-e/yr. Producing biofuels is also an important part of the strategy and landholders should be encouraged to do so
  • Many of these strategies will be viable for 50 years
  • Biochar – a stable and usable form of carbon can be added to soil and can also help with storage
  • Policy makers need to fully consider the full range of carbon storage options by the agricultural and land and rural sector and weigh these up carefully and thoroughly[4]

These key findings can assist government and policy makers to begin the process of calling in the agricultural and rural sectors to the issue of greenhouse gas emissions. Envirosafe Solutions supports a proactive and grounded approach to greenhouse gas mitigation and is an active participant in the Carbon Neutral programme. Australian coastal line soon to be MIA

Disinfectant, Rust Remover, Radiator Coolant, Dishwasher Rinse AidMany countries with an open sea access have to overcome the issues of coastal line corrosion. As the levels of the sea go higher and higher, authorities confront with the biggest challenge yet: how to stop the giant sea from “eating-up” continents?

Australia and South Australia in particular, must deal with another issue, still related to the coastal line. As the country is fully developed, there have been massive constructions placed straight on the seashore. These represent millions of dollars invested in infrastructure and national development.

As the sea progresses, it is very possible that these constructions will be under water within a few decades. This would translate in massive losses, and will make all investors take their money out of the country, and into a more secure environment.

Perhaps the answer is to be found in developing more sustainable practices and responses to the environment.

Economical impact on sea line corrosion

Nobody would sit back and relax while tons of money and land are lost to nature. Only last year, the Australian government invested over 10 million dollars on a short distance to support the seashore protection. However, it can be said that this amount is insignificant when compared to the $500 millions Australia gets every year from its maritime businesses, such as fishing or trade.

The coastline extension goes far beyond 4,000 kilometers, thus necessitating a lot more investments to be made in order to solve this issue. It is worth mentioning that as the sea expands, it is very possible for the country to lose a lot of money it would have won as a touristic location. With the seashore, losing tracts of land to the sea, fresh investments especially for seashore hotels will see a drop. And the local administrations will have nowhere to build access roads and will face other issues when building fresh infrastructure along the beach.

As it can be seen, this environmental issue is capable of causing other severe problems to the Australian’s economy. Furthermore, the seashore problem is regarded as a constant issue, not only from the past and present, but also for the future. Many still have strong reservations regarding the construction of residential apartments or hotels close to the sea line.

Environmental impact on Australia’s seas

Because of the environment changes, also implying a growth in the human population, it is estimated that many species from Australia will disappear, or their numbers will severely diminish. Scientists state that as the sea progresses, the nutrient stratification will be made in reduced quantities. This will automatically lead to:

  • Changes in fish migration
  • Changes in species distribution
  • Changes in reproduction periods
  • New species invading territories

At this point, it is very easy to assume the connection between the economical and environmental factors. If any disturbance is caused in the ecosystem, fishing and implicit a branch of the Australian economy will be severely affected.

Many of the Australian coastal lines are under “repair”. Authorities continue with various attempts to stop the sea from progressing, and invest in hope of steady seashore. However, it is more than clear that at some point, nature will win. Different studies show that global warming is an issue both caused by nature, and accelerated by people. As the polar ice will continue to melt, so will the sea level keep rising.

Australia and the coal industry

Extreme Green, Environmentally Friendly LiquidsBecause of the natural reserves found all over Australia, coal represents an important energy generator for this continent. Except from exporting the coal to different countries, Australia uses 0.5% of the energy given by this product.

It is a well-known fact that coal contributes to greenhouse effects, and by its use, future climate changes are bound to accelerate. Coal, belongs to the carbon group and once the coal is ignited, it will release tons of pollutants into the atmosphere, harmful for the environment, as well as for humans.

Coal and Economy

It is very unlikely for Australia to give up this resource. In 2008, the country had 39.6 Gigatonnes of black coal, and 37.3Gt of brown coal. It was estimated that these reserves were enough to sustain production for 500 years.

The exports value for coal comes around to $22 billion, while Australia is utilizing about 30% of the total global coal trade. In world consumption, the country is responsible for 4.6%, thus the obvious needs to be stated: Australia’s pollution with coal extends far beyond the borders of its country.

Large investments, in the form of infrastructure development, have been started in order to purify the air after the use of coal. In 2008 alone, nearly $1 billion was invested in a project known as Coal 21 Fund, which was suppose to prevent CO2 from reaching the atmosphere in large quantities.

In terms of energy production and consumption, we see that Australia uses 53% energy resulted from coal, and produces about 2% of renewable energy.  Also, the country produces only 5% of this green energy, while oil and coal is over-utilized, which is bound to lead to a crisis down the line.

Future, Pollution and Australia

Regarding the matter of coal pollution, the Australian government does not seem to have undertaken any effective measures so far. And this is because of its value to the community, to coal-mining regions and to the economy of Australia. A delicate balance of all issues may in fact be required to come to some solutions that are good for the environment and respecting ot the mining industry.

Authorities estimate that future coal production and consumption, at least on Australian mainland, will increase by 50%. According to extremists, such matters will negate any investments undertaken to protect the environment and in addition, this issue if unchecked will lead to:

  • Climate change
  • Many species will not be able to adapt, and thus will disappear
  • New habitats will be formed affecting the countries natural trade
  • The sea line will continue to progress as the sea levels will keep rising
  • Agriculture will be difficult to practice
  • Acid rains, as a result of the combination of greenhouse gases relished by coals, will be capable of destroying massive agricultural production
  • The soil will become polluted, and thus plants will be very unlikely to grow
  • Many species of vegetables or fruits will not be able to develop

But perhaps a process of arbitration and working together can be fostered and developed between green groups and the coal industry. Let’s hope solutions are not too far off.

Envirosafe Solutions supports a sustainable shift towards a green future and believes both mining and green groups can work together to achieve the best outcomes for the nation and the economy. Phone Envirosafe Solutions to source their eco-friendly Extreme Green range 1300 889070

Antarctica Focus

Environmental Cleaning Products, Extreme Green Today Envirosafe Solutions looks at some rather strange creatures and events from Antarctica.

There is a new environmental disaster in the making in Antarctica. A new chilling horror never seen before has risen from the deep Antarctic abyss. Unbelievably, giant crabs looking more like spiders, and one metre in diameter have been rising from the Antarctic abyss. So far, there are no reports of anyone having eaten any of these giant crabs so we do not know if they taste anything like their regular ocean counterparts.

However, the crabs themselves have caused large-scale environmental devastation. It seems these giant crabs have begun to impact life from the Antarctic abyss and are on the verge of destroying the entire underwater ecosystem surrounding the Antarctic abyss. The Antarctic abyss is an ecosystem that is 14 million years old. Should it be wiped out (as some are surmising may happen in years to come), a huge wealth of knowledge would be lost.1

However, environmental scientists and oceanographers are not surprised. It seems they were forewarned of this event. In 2008-09, environmental scientists and oceanographers pointed out that if oceans heat too much then warm currents would be carried all the way to the bottom of the Antarctic abyss. Here, with plenty to feed on and no natural predators, species like the Deep Ocean crabs would just keep growing until they become giants with the potential to  destroy the entire ocean floor ecosystem. And this part of the prediction may be on the way to coming true. 2

Environmental scientists and oceanographers have further considered the possibility that once these giant crabs have devoured all life forms at the ocean bottom, they will eat their way upwards and finally move on to the land. Sound like science fiction? Perhaps not.

Within a short span of hundred years, the entire Antarctic region would be covered with giant crabs. The giant crabs would eat everything in its path leaving nothing – not even the nesting birds or the penguins. The damage caused to the entire fragile Antarctic environment would be incalculable. 3

Deep ocean remotely operated submersibles have shot video footage of the vast devastation happening on the Antarctic Ocean floor. The crabs use their long pincers and second legs to prod and poke at every hole and fissure looking for food. While doing so, they puncture and destroy delicate plant and animal habitats. An environmental ecosystem that took 14 million years to evolve is being laid waste. When the ocean sediment is stirred in such a destructive manner, the ocean floor organic matter is devastated and the entire delicate ecological and environmental balance is destroyed.

The hungry giant crabs have been scavenging and eating everything within their path so much so that even sea lilies, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, brittle starts and starfish have not been spared. All these species have vanished from the Antarctic abyss.4

Until 1982, the temperature in the Antarctic abyss was 1.20°C. This was too cold for deep ocean crabs. By 2010, the temperature had risen by 0.27°C. The new temperature is acceptable for deep ocean crabs. Scientists worry that if deep ocean crabs can invade and destroy environmentally sensitive regions such as the Antarctic abyss, then they can wreak a similar destruction across the entire world’s ocean floor and all this thanks to human environmental pollution; the ocean floor has now become a warmer place to live.

Agriculture and Climate Change

Eco Friendly , Eco Friendly Liquid ProductsThe CSIRO recently published their long awaited Climate Change book, Climate Change: Science and Solutions for Australia.[1] The publication provides fresh and up to date information on the latest scientific findings on many climate change topics relevant to Australia and the rest of the world. “Climate change research over many years shows links between human activities and warming of the atmosphere and oceans. This warming has caused changes to the climate system, such as changes in rain and wind patterns and reductions in Antarctic sea ice.”[2]

But what are the real implications for agriculture. How does the agricultural sector successfully adapt to climate change here in Australia, given we are already a continent of vast extremes and weather variations, which are only going to become more pronounced?

Envirosafe Solutions has taken a careful look at the publication’s chapter, “Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change,” and outlines the latest findings and information relevant to the sector.

Agriculture and changing conditions

Dr. Chris Stokes and Dr. Mark Howden know all about agriculture and climate change. It’s one of their specialist research areas. Both academics maintain that “helping agriculture adapt to climate change involves helping communities to understand why adaptation is needed.”[3] Education is key and Australians from the agricultural sector need to understand that new flexible, risk-based approaches will help, along with a simple adoption of already existing best practice management strategies and good natural resource management approaches. Radical and aggressive measures and changes to operations may not always be required, but there still is a national imperative to equip Australian agriculture to be prepared to adapt to climate change.

The sector, including fishing and forestry already copes with a harsh environment, and producers may in fact be well placed and already adept at continually managing their practices to deal with extreme conditions. Climate Change and global warming may well undoubtedly add a new aspect or dimension to these conditions, but because of the historical familiarity with extreme weather patterns, Australia’s agriculture sector may fare better than its counterparts from other regions on the planet.

Collaboration is the key

The authors however, point out that proper adaptation cannot be left to farmers and agriculturists or even governments alone. “Everyone involved in the food industry, including policy makers, research and development providers, enterprise managers, politicians and farmers can contribute to solutions by working in collaboration. For example, Governments can ensure that water and drought policies accord with successful farm adaptation and do not impede it.” [4] It is this collaborative approach that will ensure successful and timely adaptation occurs with minimal bureaucratic obstruction and red tape.

Envirosafe Solutions supports a collaborative approach to climate change for the agriculture sector. The sector needs to be supported through changes by bureaucracy, governments and government departments and various stakeholders. Farmers and agriculturalists need to be listened to and “every strategy should derive from working with farmers, fishers and foresters to develop a choice of alternative adaptations to suit the range of likely climates they may encounter.”[5]

Turtle Rehab and Marine Debris

Turtle Rehab and Marine DebrisIf you have ever visited The Great Barrier Reef or been to any one of its coral quays such as Heron Island, you will know the delightful duality of the turtle. Slow and cumbersome on land as it makes its way up the beach for laying, and graceful and agile in the water, as it glides and moves on its subaquatic journeying. The large sea turtle is an amazing creature and yet according to the Sea Turtle Foundation it is close to extinction and needs your help.

The Sea Turtle Foundation states there are 2 main threats to the turtles: natural and human. But it is the human threat that is most concerning. “Human impacts are now the sole cause of all sea turtle species being listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. It is recent human activities that have created new causes of death and greater mortality amongst the sea turtles,” states the foundation.[1] It also lists the following as the most serious human activities:

  • Climate change
  • Habitat changes
  • Boat strikes
  • Marine debris
  • Fishing activities
  • Unsustainable hunting
  • Poor water quality
  • Feral animal predation
  • Tourist souvenirs[2]

Marine Debris

Every year, 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles and around 1 million sea birds die from consuming or getting tangled in marine debris. This debris consists of any material that is dumped or thrown or blown into the ocean. The piece of plastic you drop in the street, may make its way along a stormwater drain and out to sea. Months later, the very same plastic bag could be found in the stomach of a dead sea turtle lying on a north Queensland or Great Barrier Reef Beach.

And this plastic is by far the worst offender and threat to this mammal. Plastic bags waft and undulate in the ocean currents and resemble the jellyfish which is the natural food source for many turtle species. Once the plastic is ingested, it can choke the turtle or block it stomach and its digestive tract.

The Sea Turtle Foundation director, Tim Harvey, is currently leading the push for a turtle rehab centre to be established in Gladstone in central Queensland. “At the moment, anybody who finds a turtle and needs to get it to a rehab centre has to take it down to Brisbane or the Gold Coast and that is a long, long way. If we could get a rehab centre going here in Gladstone, it would be a fantastic thing for the area because it is a huge area for turtles,” he said.[3]

The foundation is also working hard with local governments and councils and other bodies to encourage people to dispose of their rubbish appropriately. It currently

  • Works with local councils to have pollutant traps placed over stormwater drains
  • Lobbies government for tighter controls
  • Raises awareness amongst community members and businesses
  • Works with many other organisations to help clean local regions and coastlines
  • Works towards complete bans on mass balloon releases and free plastic shopping bags.

What is the Boomerang Alliance?

Eco Friendly Industrial Liquid, Extreme Green , Environmentally Friendly Liquids , Soil WettaMany Australian companies, groups and individuals have been tirelessly working on environmental issues for years. Some of these have banded together to strengthen their power and their activities for change. Envirosafe Solutions spotlights The Boomerang Alliance and gives you a profile on this particular group that is committed to a zero waste in Australia.

The Boomerang Alliance comprises a group of environmental organisations that are committed to bringing about a state of zero waste in Australia. Yes, it’s a tall order and a lofty ideal, but this alliance believes it is possible and attainable. “We commit to work for zero waste in Australia based on a mechanism of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for ensuring the elimination over time of all products and packaging from the waste stream. The goal of zero demands that Australia change course on waste as a matter of urgency or risk falling further behind world’s best practice.”[1]

The Alliance also promotes a redirection of the cost burden of waste disposal away from local government and ratepayers and towards those consumers and industries that are actually producing the waste litter and excess packaging to begin with. It also says penalising poor performers and rewarding companies that embrace cleaner production and waste and litter reduction is the way forward.

The group comprises many major environmental organisations:

  • Greenpeace
  • The Australian Conservation Foundation
  • Friends of the Earth
  • Conservation Council of Western Australia
  • Clean Up Australia
  • Total Environment Centre
  • NSW Local Government and Shires Association
  • NCC zero Waste Action Group
  • Arid Lands Environment Centre
  • Nature Conservation Council of NSW

Waste and You

Each and Every Australian actually produces or generates approximately 2 tonnes of waste annually. And only about 50% of this is recycled. 50 million tonnes of waste is produced annually nationally. And there are some simple things you can do to help:

  • Use cloth shopping bags
  • Reject or say no to plastic shopping bags
  • Ask your local shops to forget about that paper bag and give you the purchased item without the packaging
  • Place those newspapers in the recycling
  • Re-use your old printed computer paper. The blank side makes great notepads when stapled together.
  • Get the kids to convert cans to cash

E-Waste

What do you do with your old printers, computers and mobile phones? Do you simply throw them out into the garbage, or do you dispose of them responsibly? The Boomerang Alliance also states “the massive explosion in the electronics consumer market was not accompanied by consumer responsibility.”[2] Australia, like the rest of the world is in fact at the tipping point regarding e-waste with over 230 million e-waste items on their way to garbage dump areas and landfill sites at the end of 2009.

A National Waste Policy

Finally in 2010 a new National Waste Policy was introduced.  The computer and television industry were involved as were many major industries and government and corporations. This policy will help to streamline a national waste strategy where previously waste management was overseen by state and territory bodies.[3]

It also sets a clear direction over the next 10 years aimed at:

  • Reducing waste generation
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Manage waste as a viable resource
  • Ensure treatment, disposal, recovery and re-use is undertaken in a safe, scientific manner
  • Develop employment associated with waste management and recycling

The policy will also be implemented at all levels, from local governments through to state and territory and on to the federal level. There will also be a focus on collaborative action and extended producer responsibility schemes that mean a producer is now responsible for the waste it produces right up until the end of the product’s life.

Envirosafe Solutions supports the work of the Boomerang Alliance and the new National Waste Policy strategy. Telephone Envirosafe Solutions and use green and eco-friendly products. 1300 889070.

Overfishing in Australia

Glass cleaner, Diesel Bug Killer, Anti-Bacterial Hand WashAustralia is the only country-continent capable of massive fish production. However, the situation has significantly changed during the last century, and overfishing has become a serious problem for Australia. Stocks are down, and sustainable practices need to be introduced and considered.

Threats to Stocks

In 2005, 17 species of fish from a total number of 84 were considered to be in danger from overfishing. Given the fact that climate change will have an impact on sea life, affecting their natural habitat, it is hard not to relate one with the other.

Another issue found in Australian waters is related to illegal fishing. Trawlers often fish illegally without any permit, right under the noses of authorities. People fishing illegally do not keep count of mating seasons or fish migration. The Australian Coast Guard also spends a large proportion of time safeguarding against illegal fishing boats in our territories, which come down from Asia to trawl and net for our stocks.

Because of this, the natural balance is disrupted and several species endangered.

Climate change impact

Fish populations in Australia are also affected by climate change which in turn affects such issues as

  • The unequal distribution of nutrients
  • The invasion from exotic species
  • Rising sea levels
  • Currents in warm and cold water

These four elements are very connected to one another an disruptions in one may have a chain effect or reaction in another – all of which throws out the delicate aquatic conditions and balances that foster fish reproduction and spawning.

With the balance thrown out, an ensuing lack of food and lack of a secure place for laying eggs, may ultimately translate into species disappearance. It is estimated that Australia loses 20 species every year, on land as on sea, which could interfere permanently and irreversibly with the natural environment cycle.

Stealing fish

Overfishing, a major concern for all Australians, has been debated within the Federal Parliament on numerous occasions over the past few years. Green groups have even argued that the significant hike in fuel prices may help to curb the waves of overfishing that can occur.

This is because fuel represents 60% of the total capital outlay associated with fishing, and any fuel hikes can significantly affect duration of time out at sea for trawlers and sizeable fishing boats.

Of course multiple measures have been implemented, from increasing coast guard and water police patrols, to utilising new and better devices to spot trawlers. And of course illegal fishermen will come up with new innovative methods to fish, from dynamiting the water to tracking fish movements with radar; Aussie sea life continues to remain endangered, more now than ever before.

But in spite of this, there are companies and organisations attempting to make a real difference.

Envirosafe Solutions is always concerned for the waters surrounding the Australian continent, and that is why the company has developed an Extreme Green Range of products that have less impact than most other counterpart products on the market. Mobile Phones and Electromagnetic Radiation

Sanitiser/Mould Rid, Hard Water - Laundry Liquid, Porta-Loo Treatment, Marine Glass CleanerRecently, there has been a lot of talk on the topic of electromagnetic radiation and the impact it may have upon human health.  Some scientists believe that electromagnetic radiation can cause genes to mutate, leading to health issues later down the track in life.  Of course, a few decried this as paranoia and conducted studies that would prove the exact opposite.

While some maintain there is no definite conclusion about EMR, other organisations such as ARPANSA – The Australian Government’s Electromagnetic radiation Complaints Register, consider otherwise. This site actually collects data and reports on possible damages to health because of EMR from mobile phones, microwaves, power-lines, induction heaters and other things.

So, is EMR dangerous or harmless?  Both theories have strong points and the results of the conducted studies sustain each one of them.

What are electromagnetic radiations?

Electromagnetic energy is all around us.  Examples of electromagnetic radiations are given by:

  • Radio waves
  • TV waves
  • Radar waves
  • Heat
  • UV light
  • X-rays
  • Short waves
  • Microwaves
  • Gamma Rays

The most debated electromagnetic radiations are those emitted by the mobile phones.  Those radiations are believed to cause problems such as changes of skin colour, overexcited brain cells, or even cancer.

Sometimes, electromagnetic radiations are compared to chemical radiations within a nuclear reactor.  It is believed that, in time, the effect is similar to radiation poisoning resulted from nuclear residues.

While in Australia, and all around the world mobile communication is increasing, concerns are being expressed about the possible impacts of electromagnetic radiation on the human body.

According to studies, electromagnetic radiation may have a negative effect upon neurotransmitter balance, the cognitive function, and REM sleep pattern and may cause various brain diseases, such as brain tumours or brain cell damage.  However, most reported effects are rather small, as long as the intensity of the radiation remains with a given range.

Biological effects of electromagnetic radiation

Researchers blame many diseases on electromagnetic radiation.  For example, the radiation from GSM cell phones may cause a certain amount of stress to two of the proteins that exist in our skin.  Another study shows that cell phone frequencies have caused damage to the neurons of rats, directly affecting their cortex.

As we know, rats are physiologically similar to humans; the results may be conclusive but like everything else this debate has stirred, there’re opposing points of view on what the rats exhibited.

Also, Italian researchers have found that electromagnetic radiations have a negative influence upon the growth of leukaemia cells.  According to the research, leukaemia cells that were exposed to normal cell phone frequencies for 48 hours, started replicating more aggressively.

According to an additional Israeli study, people who use cell phones are often are more likely to develop a form of cancer that attacks the salivary glands.  Also, brain tumours, miscarriages, and lymphatic cancer have all been linked to electromagnetic radiation.

However, other scientists claim that even those results are accurate the possibility of developing any form of cancer only from using the mobile phone is minimal, since the electromagnetic radiation emitted by this device is not dangerous to anyone.

Be aware of the unseen impact of EMR and use telecommunications devices responsibly.

Envirosafe Solutions supports the responsible use of technology and believes a sustainable way forward for the environment and business can be achieved. Telephone to speak with Envirosafe Solutions about their environmentally friendly Extreme Green products. 1300 889070.

Hot and Cold

Marine Glass Cleaner, Radiator Cleaner, Dishwashing LiquidWhile heating and cooling concerns may not be as severe as those experienced by our European counterparts, there is no doubt the extremes of the Australian climate in some parts of the nation, means that energy expenditure must be monitored carefully. Summer in Australia can be very, very hot, and winters in the inland regions and in the southern states can be bitingly cold. This of course translates to the possibility of excessive spending and usage of energy. We warm our homes, we cool our homes. We try as best we can, to live comfortably on a continent of extremes and often rugged conditions. Today Envirosafe Solutions considers what each of us can do to minimise our heating and cooling costs. And in so doing, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the planet on its way.

According to the Australian Government, heating and cooling of Australian homes and businesses can account for up to 40% of the total annual energy use. In some cases, it is even more.[1] But there are solutions and there are alternatives. There are various strategies and approaches you can adopt to cut down on your heating and cooling costs and here are just a few:

Passive Design

“Passive design is design that does not require any mechanical heating or cooling. Homes that are passively designed take advantage of natural climate to maintain thermal comfort.” [2] This involves such factors as:

  • Shading
  • Orientation of the build
  • Designing with the climate in mind
  • Utilising passive solar heating

If you are thinking about building a house, think about these factors at the design and planning stage. You may be surprised at how much money you can save in heating bills later on down the track once you are living in your new home.[3]

Other ways you can reduce your heating and cooling costs is to consider the modes of mechanical heating and cooling you use.

Mechanical Heating

If you cannot implement passive heating and cooling, then the next best option may indeed be to choose appropriate heating for your particular situation. This will depend on your individual circumstances. But here are few guidelines that may help you on your way:

  • Gas heaters. These are cheaper to run than electric heaters and produce 1/3 greenhouse gas emissions than the electrical equivalent.
  • Heat pumps or reverse-cycle air conditioners are the most energy efficient when it comes to electric heating
  • Electric in-slab floor heating is the most expensive heating to run.

Mechanical Cooling

There are a number of mechanical cooling options to choose from:

  • Fans. These are the cheapest option on the market and in less extreme areas of Australia may be sufficient to cool homes.
  • Evaporative coolers. These are the preferred choice in areas where there is very low humidity.
  • Air conditioners. These are by far the most damaging to the environment. Filters need to be cleaned regularly and conditioners that are not installed correctly or that are not maintained properly can cost you more.

Make sure to source the cheapest and most environmentally sound heating and cooling options.

Chain Reaction

Fabric Conditioner, Laundry Powder, Dust SuppressorLike most of you, Envirosafe Solutions has monitored and followed the events of the massive tsunami that hit Japan on the 11th March 2011. Not only were whole communities wiped out, but the tsunami led to a series of chain events and reactions, one of which was the demise and destruction and leaking of the Fukushima Power Plant. Envirosafe Solutions has provided regular updates on the Fukushima situation and today provides new information for you to consider.

On July 10, Japan’s Prime Minister announced that the decommissioning of the crippled Fukushima Plant could well take decades. “It is now expected to take 3, 5 or 10 years to control it and even several decades until the accident settles finally,” he said.[1] The cleanup had also been suspended In June because of high radiation and safety concerns, and this has continually slowed down the cleanup effort.

It will also take several decades before the reactors can be dismantled, which means the whole area is effectively a barren and deserted wasteland for the next twenty to thirty years.

At this stage, the Japanese government is also attempting to develop a long tern revised roadmap for dealing with the site and the issue.

Satellite imagery before and after shots over the Fukushima plant site can now be viewed online, and these show the clear extent of devastation the plant experienced.

Radioactive caesium in Tokyo water

The ABC also reported on July 4 that radioactive caesium has now been found in tap water in Tokyo. With a half life of 30 years, it is extremely toxic. The contaminated water –containing caesium 137 – was found in samples from the Shinjuku ward. While authorities are stating the levels are well below the maximum safety limit, residents in the area are not happy about it.[2]

The same toxic caesium has also impacted various sewage systems in Japan. Sludge from a treatment plant in Fukushima has been detected and radioactivity has also been found in sewage in the nation’s capital. Japanese authorities are now surmising that some of the radioactive material from the stricken Fukushima reactor may have seeped into sewage pipes, eventually accumulating in treatment facilities.

Disaster Rating

The severity rating of the Fukushima disaster was initially downplayed. But in recent weeks, the Fukushima incident has been rescaled to a level 7 which means it is now on par with the disaster level for Chernobyl. Chernobyl is of course the world’s worst ever civilian nuclear accident, which dispersed radioactive material over much of Europe and even beyond. Radiation zones have also now been extended beyond the 20 km exclusion zone because of increased risk.

Envirosafe Solutions is well aware of the dangers that chemicals and toximaterials can pose to the atmosphere, to water supplies and to the environment. That is why we have worked hard to develop a safer alternative to many of the liquid industrial and cleaning products on the market today. All the Envirosafe products come with their own specially devised safety rating and with a comprehensive labelling that allows you to know exactly what you are using. Better Pollution Controls for All

Soil Wetta, Insect & Tar Remover, Solvent-Free DegreaserIf you have ever visited Bakersfield in California, you would know the pollution situation there is dire.1 As I drove through the city on a recent visit, I noticed that the pollution level in Bakersfield was so bad that it was visible to the naked eye in the form of dense grey smog and I made a mental note to look up current pollution control norms in the USA.3 It also led me to wonder about the history of pollution control and regulations in the United States and whether they were leading the way on the issue, given the current state of the global environment. 2

My research on pollution control norms in the USA found that the US government had passed the Clean Air Act back in the 70’s.4 At that time, the new pollution control norms was hailed as one of the most rigorous anti-pollution norms to be enforced in the world and resulted in cars that had cleaner emissions, factories that were less polluting due to the newly mandated and installed air scrubbers and fuels that contained less harmful pollutants. The new pollution control norms meant that Americans could breathe easier – for a while.

As the number of cars, air planes, ships, factories and other contributors to air pollution kept increasing, the ozone levels (principle contributor to smog) in the cities also kept steadily increasing.5 By the 90’s, many American cities were affected by the higher concentrations of ground level ozone and the time had come for pollution control norms that were stronger and tighter.

The Environmental Protection Agency in the USA is the principle authority that is responsible for keeping a check on pollution in America.6 I found out that it had indeed drawn up tighter and more up-to-date pollution control norms that should have taken care of the smog situation that affects as many as half the cities in the USA. Unfortunately, as in most other countries, the new and tighter pollution control norms were stuck somewhere in the files awaiting government approval. The polluting industries it seems have an iron grip at the highest levels in the White House and will not allow the President to receive sufficient support to pass the law enforcing tighter pollution control norms.

Had the new pollution control norms come into force, more investment would have been required for installing up-to-date pollution control equipment and for producing engines that burn fuel through a cleaner process and fuels that are leaner in carbon content. The main opposition stems from a flawed logic that the new pollution control norms would mean increased costs and therefore jobs would be lost. Of course the costs would go up. But it is equally true that new jobs would be created in the manufacture and installation of new anti-pollution equipment and revised monitoring norms.

Instead of waiting for America to lead the world with new pollution control norms, surely this is an opportunity for Australia (and other governments in the world) to take the initiative and accept the mantel of leadership in setting up new pollution control norms.7 Australia can indeed lead the way on this issue.
