A previously undeveloped area in Fiji filled with copper ore, one of the largest in the world, was recently acquired by Newcrest Mining, an Australian mining company which possesses over a seventy percent stake in the proposed mine. The area set aside for the mining development lies just northwest of Suva and would bring in a great many Fijian jobs, both temporary and permanent employment, and stimulate the local economy which is sore need of repair, anyway. However, concerns about waste disposal and infecting local water supply and the flood plain which lies downstream from the area are making some protest over the proposed mining operation.

On the one hand, the Fijian economy could use the boost from the two thousand temporary jobs which would be filled, and the later thousand permanent job positions which would be available. Since this is one of the richest untapped deposits on the globe, it is not surprising that any mining company would want to take advantage of their majority stake in the operation, and set up and get started. Perhaps, the reason why it has not been started prior to this time has been for research on how to handle the flooding problem and the potential toxicity which would need to be alleviated from the mining operations in their waste materials disposal.

On the other hand, toxicity and waste from a copper mine would be very poisonous and the area must be thoroughly documented and researched to make sure that this will not affect the water supply, the flood plain which lies downstream of the proposed mine site, or the inhabitants which live near the flood plain. Even the increase is waste disposal from such a large project site, and it should be reiterated that this is one of the largest undeveloped areas for copper, could cause a strain of volume only on the local waste system, not to mention the affects it may have on ecological systems which are native to that area.

U.S. companies are shooting themselves in the foot, so to speak, by not taking advantage of the tax breaks which are now currently available for ecologically friendly practices and green restructuring programs. Every year about 1000 whales are hunted in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary and every year Australian protesters take to the waters in protest. Recent revelations that Australia is importing fresh whale imports could threaten our international credibility as eco-friendly.

Australia has found itself in murky waters following revelations that a handful of its companies have been cleared to import fresh whale products.

A recent softening of anti-uranium policy by Western Australia’s Labor Opposition has made uranium mining a near certainty. A strong environmental commitment – including a switch to eco-friendly industrial liquids – holds the key to dissolving community fears about this nuclear product.

“We remain opposed to uranium mining, but I recognise we have to deal with the hand we are dealt if we come to government in 2013,” Mr McGowanhas said.

“Accordingly, if Labor is successful at the 2013 election any uranium mine under construction will be allowed to proceed, to become operational and operate in its lawfully granted conditions.”

The race is on for mining companies to open WA’s first yellowcake mine. Adelaide-based Toro Energy has announced plans to start construction on its $280 million Wiluna project by 2013 and wants to export about 820 tonnes of uranium oxide each year.

Dry and wet mulch are both different types of fertilizer and soil treatment which can be organically made and sustained. Ever since lasers replaced messy inkjet printing techniques, researchers have been looking to use lasers in other ways, as well. Well, finally, you can vaporize ink, words and images on paper through the use of lasers, something which is very eco friendly and saves on a lot of paper and recycling. It simply undoes the process on the same piece of paper, conserving both paper and extra printing and developing costs. Toner is mostly made of plastic polymer and carbon, and it is the polymer in the paper that is heated up to such an extent by the laser that it is vaporized. This technique is not ready for mass production yet, but it has successfully been used for removing words and images from ordinary paper, so it is simply a matter of continuing to test and evaluate the process before it is ready to mass market.

And how does the paper look after the ink has been removed? The BBC article shows a microscopic image of the paper where the image has been vaporized and the paper fibers are slightly indented because of the removal process. This would hardly be visible to the naked eye, however, and the image does show how the paper is certainly intact and quite resilient after the process is complete. It has a very small simple crater-like effect upon the paper, on a microscopic level, which is most likely due to the ink having been imbedded slightly in the paper before it was vaporized and removed. This would save on costs spent producing and replacing paper, it would save on recycling, and it would save on ink, printing and electrical costs. Obviously, it is just a small step in the right direction, but it is certainly an effective one!
