Every year about 1000 whales are hunted in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary and every year Australian protesters take to the waters in protest. Recent revelations that Australia is importing fresh whale imports could threaten our international credibility as eco-friendly.

Australia has found itself in murky waters following revelations that a handful of its companies have been cleared to import fresh whale products.

Despite a strong anti-whaling stance – including protests against Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean – it has been revealed that since 2005 four companies have had approval to import fresh whale products.

Extreme green protestors continue to take strong measures to expose the cruelty of whaling, which has long been viewed by Australians as non-environmentally-friendly. Liquid and plastic waste may be choking marine life but commercial fishing and whaling continue to pose a significant threat to sustainability.

Australia’s strong anti-whaling stance appears at odds with fresh whale imports. Better access to information is needed to identify whether the products are needed for scientific research.

Importantly, Australia needs to protect its reputation or risk being perceived as underhanded by the international community when it comes to this issue.

A recent softening of anti-uranium policy by Western Australia’s Labor Opposition has made uranium mining a near certainty. A strong environmental commitment – including a switch to eco-friendly industrial liquids – holds the key to dissolving community fears about this nuclear product.

Western Australia’s new opposition leader has backed away from a previous Labor Party election commitment to halt the operation of uranium mines.

Mark McGowan has softened his party’s anti-uranium policy more than a year out from next year’s March state elections.

Uranium mining has been opposed in Western Australia because of concerns over the environment and safety. While nuclear supporters defend uranium mining as environmentally-friendly, liquid waste from tailings and radioactive waste present management challenges.

Mr McGowan indicated in January that should his party win the next State election it would allow any uranium mining projects already under construction to operate.

WA’s Labor Party had previously broke away from its Federal Government counterparts on the issue of uranium mining, vowing to block projects if elected despite Federal Labor supporting uranium exports to India.

“We remain opposed to uranium mining, but I recognise we have to deal with the hand we are dealt if we come to government in 2013,” Mr McGowanhas said.

“Accordingly, if Labor is successful at the 2013 election any uranium mine under construction will be allowed to proceed, to become operational and operate in its lawfully granted conditions.”

The race is on for mining companies to open WA’s first yellowcake mine. Adelaide-based Toro Energy has announced plans to start construction on its $280 million Wiluna project by 2013 and wants to export about 820 tonnes of uranium oxide each year.

In recent years, bamboo has been touted as the eco friendly substance of the future, and many home renovations and clothing and furniture are being made out of bamboo in order to seem eco friendly. How true is the legend that bamboo is better than wood and more sustainable than many other materials? After all, if we are more likely to buy something because it is made of bamboo and appears to be more eco friendly, then it would be wise to investigate the motivations behind our intent to buy.

One of the greatest cons of using bamboo is the fact that many products, such as flooring, cannot be made out of bamboo without also using highly toxic chemicals in the mix in order to make the product more reliable and more durable. Dry and wet mulch are both different types of fertilizer and soil treatment which can be organically made and sustained. Mulch is comprised of many different things, including dead leaves, decaying and rotten vegetation, including old groceries, twigs, tea, water, soil, Styrofoam, paper, wood shavings, and other organic materials, such as animal feces and snake skins. These worms can be bought and placed in a container of mulch or simply allowed to work their way through a large outdoor pile of mulch. It is important to make sure that you understand how to handle these worms, in case there is a potential need to only use them in a container.

In all cases of decay, the mulch must be wet and broken down to a reasonable degree in order to decay in any kind of a timely fashion. If you need dry mulch from your garden, the decayed mulch must be spread thinly in the sunshine to dry out first, but the decaying process itself requires moisture at all times. Dry material does not break down very quickly.
